Ian Gloucester ist schon seit seiner Kindheit davon überzeugt, dass er dazu verflucht ist, ein Leben als zerstörerisches Monster zu führen. Seine Tage verbringt er damit, Kardinal Brixton, der ihn aus den Tiefen seiner Hölle geholt hat, treu zu dienen – bis eines Tages ein mysteriöser Mann namens Soleite Winkler auftaucht. Dieser teilt Ians „Fluch“ und erklärt ihm, dass es sich dabei überhaupt nicht um einen Fluch handelt, sondern um Magie!

Daraufhin beginnt Ian, alles um ihn herum infrage zu stellen. Widerstrebend formen die beiden ein Bündnis, um die Korruption zu entlarven, die sich im Königreich festgesetzt hat. Trotz der Loyalität, die Ian dem streng religiösen Kardinal gegenüber empfindet, beginnt er sich langsam zu Sol hingezogen zu fühlen und entwickelt Gefühle für ihn. Zum ersten Mal in seinem Leben ist er nicht alleine. Wird Ian es schaffen, nicht nur sich selbst zu lieben und zu akzeptieren, sondern auch seine neue Liebe, die ihm zur Freiheit verhilft?
