Als Elaen die Mutter von Ahen, ihrem frisch gebackenen Ehemann und seines Zeichens mittelloser Händler, kennenlernen soll, wird ihr von allen Seiten gesagt, dass es die Hölle sei, mit seiner Schwiegermutter unter einem Dach zu leben oder auch nur Kontakt zu haben. Zu ihrem Unglück stellt sich auch noch heraus, dass ihr werter Ehemann gelogen hat, und es sich bei ihrer Schwiegermutter in Wahrheit um niemand Geringeres handelt als die große Zauberin Kanessis Corenea! Nach einem zaghaften Start stellt Elaen aber fest, dass Kanessis so gut wie nichts mit der bösen Schwiegermutter aus den Horrorgeschichten gemein hat, und lernt ihr Charisma und ihre unerwartete Freundlichkeit zu schätzen. Wenn überhaupt, ist das einzige Problem Ahen und die Frage, warum er Elaen unter der Vorspiegelung falscher Tatsachen geheiratet hat. Zusammen mit Kanessis stellt sich Elaen nun den Herausforderungen ihrer Ehe. Und wer weiß? Vielleicht ist das Zusammenwohnen mit ihrer Schwiegermutter das Beste, was ihr je hätte passieren können.
