Obwohl Jasmine die jüngste Tocher der Flamesworth-Familie ist, hat sie es nicht leicht. Die Flamesworth sind eine lange Linie, bestehend aus den mächtigsten Feuermagiern. Dementsprechend hat das Familienoberhaupt und gleichzeitig Jasmines Vater, Trodius Flamesworth, hohe Erwartungen an alle seine Kinder. Da seine Erwartungen gegenüber Jasmine besonders hoch sind, muss sie bereits von klein auf jeden Tag trainieren, noch bevor sich überhaupt ihr Mana-Kern gebildet hat. Da auch unter den Kindern eine hohe Rivalität besteht und Jasmine unbedingt die Anerkennung ihres Vaters gewinnen möchte, setzt sie alles daran, so früh wie möglich zu erwachen. Doch als es endlich so weit ist, ändert sich Jasmines Leben schlagartig: Sie ist die erste Flamesworth ohne Feueraffinität und stattdessen eine Windmagierin!
