Shinji Wakatsuki arbeitet für das auf Lebensversicherungen spezialisierte Versicherungsunternehmen Shouwa Seimei. Als er eines Tages auf Anfrage eines Klienten seiner Firma, Shigenori Komoda, dessen Haus aufsucht, entdeckt er dort den Sohn der Familie erhängt in einem der Nebenzimmer. Da die Polizei während der Untersuchung des Todesfalls Fremdeinwirkung nicht ausschließen kann, setzt die Firma die Auszahlung der Lebensversicherung für den Sohn vorerst aus. Die Komodas besuchen daraufhin Tag für Tag die Zweigstelle, in der Wakatsuki angestellt ist, und bitten hartnäckig um eine Bewilligung der Auszahlung. Wakatsuki hegt derweil den Verdacht, dass Shigenori Komoda den Sohn der Familie umgebracht haben könnte, um an die Lebensversicherung des Kindes zu gelangen, und stellt auf eigene Faust Nachforschungen über die Vergangenheit der Familie an …
