Giwaku (1982)

When the car of a local industrialist veers off the road at the harbour pier in Toyama prefecture and plunges into the sea, the public uproar is great. Businessman Fukutarou Shirakawa is killed in the accident, while Kumako Onizawa, his second wife, manages to escape from the sinking wreckage without injury. When it comes to light that in the past Kumako had committed numerous crimes with her love, and she had taken out a life insurance policy of 300 million yen for her husband, suspicion arises that she staged the accident – knowing full well that her husband could not swim. Although there is no solid evidence, Kumako is arrested, and the star lawyer she hired refuses to defend her in light of the negative press coverage. Finally, Ritsuko Sahara is assigned as her public defender. Although Kumako meets her with nothing but hostility and the press belittles her chances in a trial, the lawyer’s firm efforts soon bring a different perspective on the accident into play …

Als am Hafenpier in der Präfektur Toyama das Auto eines lokalen Großunternehmers von der Straße abkommt und ins Meer stürzt, ist das öffentliche Aufsehen groß. Der Unternehmer Fukutarou Shirakawa kommt bei dem Unglück ums Leben, während Kumako Onizawa, seine zweite Ehefrau, sich ohne Verletzungen aus dem sinkenden Wrack befreien kann. Als ans Licht kommt, dass Kumako in der Vergangenheit zahlreiche Verbrechen mit ihrem Liebhaber beging und dass sie eine Lebensversicherung über 300 Millionen Yen für ihren Ehemann abgeschlossen hatte, kommt der Verdacht auf, sie habe den Unfall fingiert – wohl wissend, dass ihr Ehemann nicht schwimmen konnte. Obwohl keine stichhaltigen Beweise vorliegen, wird Kumako verhaftet und auch der von ihr beauftragte Star-Anwalt lehnt ihre Verteidigung aufgrund der negativen Berichterstattung ab. Schließlich wird ihr Ritsuko Sahara als Pflichtverteidigerin zugewiesen. Obwohl Kumako ihr ablehnend begegnet und auch die Presse ihre Chancen nur müde belächelt, rückt durch den engagierten Einsatz der Anwältin bald eine andere Sichtweise auf den Unfall in den Fokus …
