Synopsis

In 2015, the telephone number 189 was launched as a new emergency number in Japan. It is to be dialled when there is a suspicion of child abuse. Regardless of whether they are adults or not, anyone who calls this number is immediately referred to the nearest youth welfare office.

Taiga Sakamoto has only been working at the youth welfare office for a short time when a young girl he had been looking after because her mother was abusing her is sent back home … The next day, however, he learns that the girl has died. This hits him hard and he even considers quitting his job.

Though, before he can do so, he receives a call from the hospital. The doctor on the other end of the line informs him that he has a six-year-old girl with him whose wounds look like physical abuse. The first suspicion immediately falls on her father, who, nonetheless, denies having anything to do with the injuries. Not wanting another innocent child to lose its life, Taiga sets out with lawyer Shion Akiba to find evidence that the girl is being abused by her father.
