In den 1960er Jahren ist der Waise Joe Yabuki in den Slums von Tokio Zuhause und gerät dort regelmäßig in Schlägereien und Haft. Als er wieder einmal in eine Schlägerei hineingerät, ist auch der Ex-Boxer und Alkoholiker Danpei Tange darin verwickelt und erkennt in Joes Schlagtechnik das Talent zum Boxer. Doch bevor er Joe das Angebot machen kann ihn zu trainieren, wird Joe in die Jugendstrafanstalt gesteckt, woraufhin Danpei versucht ihn mittels Briefe anzuwerben, welche auch spezielle Trainingsanleitungen beinhalten. Anfangs hat Joe keinerlei Interesse, doch nachdem er in eine Schlägerei mit dem Mithäftling Toru Rikiishi, einem Profiboxer, gerät und verliert, wird seine Leidenschaft fürs Boxen geweckt, denn er möchte Rikiishi um jeden Preis besiegen.
