Description

Jackie Chan is a Hong Kong actor, film producer, screenwriter, film director, stuntman, and singer. His body of work includes over 80 films in which he has a role as a performer – over 60 with a leading role and a total involvement, including singing, in over 140 films.

He was born as Kong-Sang Chan on 7 April 1954 in Hong Kong and grew up in poor circumstances. His family had fled to Hong Kong during the Chinese Civil War. As his father was a master of Chinese fighting techniques, he taught Chan these at a young age.

At the age of seven, his parents sent him to the Beijing Opera School, which specialised in martial arts, singing and acting. There, the “hyperactive” Chan was to be disciplined, but also to learn fighting and acting. After his parents emigrated to Australia because they found work there, he was adopted by the master of the academy.

After graduating from the Peking Opera School and a rather volatile life in bars and gambling halls, he followed his parents. He worked in the construction industry, among other jobs, where he also got his name “Jackie” because his work colleagues had difficulty pronouncing his Chinese name.

At the age of seven, Chan made his film debut in “Big and Little Wong Tin-Bar”. After graduating, he first worked as a stuntman, among others in the films “Fist of Fury” and “Enter the Dragon”, in which Bruce Lee starred. Chan attracted attention through his particularly reckless actions. In this way, he got his first roles as an actor and also worked as a stunt coordinator, even as the youngest in Hong Kong’s film history.

In 1981, he starred in “The Cannonball Run”, which featured stars such as Roger Moore, Burt Reynolds, Dean Martin and Farrah Fawcett. Chan also starred in the 1984 sequel. However, he did not make his breakthrough in America then.

After a fall during the filming of “Armour of God”, he became hard of hearing in one ear. This film almost cost him his life when he fell from a tree and landed on his head. Since that fall, he has had a hole in his head sealed with a plastic plug.

In 1994, he made his breakthrough in America with “Rumble in the Bronx”. It is the first of his films to make it to the top of the American box office charts.

Since 1982, Jackie Chan has been married to the Taiwanese actress Joan Lin Feng-Chiao, with whom he has a son named Jaycee Chan, who is also a singer, actor, and director.

In 2006, the US magazine “Forbes” named him “one of the ten most generous celebrities in the world”.
