Description
Tooru Hara was a Japanese film producer and businessman. After graduating from university, he worked at the animation studio Toei Douga from 1959. There he was part of the production of the film “Horus: Prince of the Sun” by director Isao Takahata, whose financial failure was one of the reasons that led them to leave Toei.
Shortly after leaving Toei, Hara founded Studio Top Craft, the immediate predecessor of Studio Ghibli, in 1972. Hara remained involved with Ghibli until 1991, producing several films before leaving the studio over a disagreement with Hayao Miyazaki about the construction of a new studio building.
