Description

Shikibu Murasaki, which translates as “Violet of Ceremony”, is the name that was subsequently given to a lady-in-waiting at the imperial court who worked as a writer. She was the author of “The Tale of Genji”, the first important novel of the Eastern world and a masterpiece of classical Japanese literature, which was made into several films and manga.

Many details of her life are unknown or disputed, including her birth name. She is said to have been born between 970 and 978 and died between 1014 and 1031.
