Zunächst wird Pele als einsam, verlassen und feige dargestellt. Sie hat anfänglich Angst davor, sich Lyras Seite anzuschließen, weil sie nicht verletzt werden will. Sobald sie Lyra wieder trifft - nachdem sie von ihr weg geschwommen ist und mit Tua gesprochen hatte - zeigt sich, dass sie sich mehr öffnet und ein paar Risiken eingeht. Dennoch gibt es Gelegenheiten, in denen ihr vergangenes, verängstigtes selbst wieder auftaucht.

Nachdem sie geglaubt hatte, Tua sei gestorben, wurde Pele rachsüchtig. Ihre einzige Motivation bestand darin, sich an den Sirenenjägern zu rächen, die ihn getötet hatten.
